Title

Regional spatial development of Ljubljana: Strategic aspects

Abstract

In the paper, an analysis of the strategic position of Ljubljana as the capital of the Republic of Slovenia at the European (EU), European macroregional, state and regional level is presented. This position is characterized by numerous strengths and opportunities, as well as weaknesses and threats. Settlement and transport infrastructure development characteristics are given central attention. Furthermore, significance of institutional and organizational characteristics, as well as of managerial capacities of the administrative structures in Ljubljana, is emphasized as an important factor for capitalization of strengths and opportunities, as well as for mitigation of weaknesses and threats. A vision, general and specific development objectives at the above mentioned levels for Ljubljana are proposed. They form a potential strategic development framework, which could be of use to the governance structures when considering the position and role of Ljubljana in the proposed national and European major projects.
